Add order-level fees (flat handling charges, small-order surcharges, payment method fees) in a few steps.
Step 1: Add the fee
- In Shopify admin, open the Magical Fees app and click Add fee.
- For a card surcharge, open the Credit card processing fee template. It already charges a percentage of the subtotal and applies only when the customer pays by credit card. For a fee on every order regardless of payment method, open the Processing fee template. Adjust the amount on the preview, then click Activate fee.
For any other order fee, click Create custom fee, choose the Function Method, and on the form:
- Enter a Title (e.g., "Handling Fee" or "Credit Card Surcharge").
- Set the fee type to Order.
- Under What it charges, set the price (a fixed amount such as $2.00, or a percentage such as 2.5%).
- Under When it applies, choose Subtotal. This bases the fee on the order total before shipping, tax, and discounts.
Order total: On the Plus plan with Shopify Plus, you can select Total instead. The fee is calculated after discounts, shipping, and tax. Use this when you need fees to apply to the final order amount.

Optional: to add payment method fees, click Add payment methods and select Credit Cards. (Plus Plan) On Plus, you can also select PayPal, Shop Pay, Cash on Delivery, or any payment method you've labeled in Settings.

Optional: to limit the fee by location, click Add locations and select the countries or regions where it applies.

Click Save.
Step 2: Finish the setup guide
If your online store isn't set up for fees yet, the fee is created as a Draft with a Finish your setup checklist on its page:
- Enable in theme editor: click it, then Open theme editor. The Magical Fees app embed is already selected; turn it on and click Save. The task checks itself off.
- Turn on Hide dynamic checkout buttons when fees apply in the same app embed. Payment method fees can't be applied through express checkout buttons, so this step matters for surcharges.
- Turn on the Checkout UI extension so the app can detect the payment method at checkout:
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout and click Edit on your active checkout profile.
- In the editor, open the Checkout page. Under Order summary, click Add block and select Magical Product Fees.
- Click the Magical Product Fees block. Under Checkout behavior, enable Allow app to block checkout and Include block in Shop Pay.
- Click Save.
- Click Activate fee at the top of the page.
Step 3: Check where it works
The fee's Where it works card shows each channel's status. Payment method fees don't apply in person on POS; if you also need a card fee on POS, create a POS-only fee and apply it with the Manual fees tile.
That's it. Your order fee is live and appears at cart and checkout.

Always label deposits separately for compliance
Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
