If POS app only staff can't use the Magical Fees tile after using their PIN, or Shopify POS shows "Session token fetch failed for Magical Fees. Check [name]'s permissions", the initial login user needs a Store role that grants access to Magical Fees. Magical Fees runs with the permissions of the staff member who logged in to Shopify POS on the device, not the staff member who is pinned in.
- Identify the initial login user. This is the name shown in the error message. POS app only staff can't log in to Shopify POS; the store owner, organization owner, or a user with the POS device setup role does.
- Grant that user access to Magical Fees. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Users > Roles, open the Store role assigned to the initial login user, and under App and sales channel permissions, make sure Magical Fees is checked. Click Save. If the user has no Store role, select the user in the Users list and click Assign in the Roles section to assign them one. The POS device setup role is a Point of Sale role and doesn't grant access to apps.
- Log out of Shopify POS on the device, log in again as the initial login user, and then use a PIN to access Shopify POS as the cashier.
POS app only staff don't need a Store role, and no other admin permission is required. If the initial login user already has access to Magical Fees and the tile still doesn't work, reach out to support and we’ll take a closer look.
Always label deposits separately for compliance
Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
