Note: Detecting and labeling additional payment methods is only available on the Plus plan with Shopify Plus.
Credit card, PayPal, Shop Pay, and Cash on Delivery (COD) are built in. If your checkout offers other options, such as a buy now pay later provider or a bank transfer, Magical Fees detects them from your orders. Confirm the name once and the method becomes selectable in your fee rules.
Where to find it
In the Magical Fees app, open Settings to reach Advanced Settings, then scroll to Payment methods. Check your payment provider's terms first: some providers restrict extra fees, and any required disclosure wording at checkout is your responsibility.
How detection works
Magical Fees reads a payment method's real name from a completed order that used it. If the list is empty, place a test order with any method and refresh. That one order reveals every method your checkout offers, not just the one used to pay.
Each row shows the method's type, its handle, when it was last seen, and a badge:
- Detected. Confirmed by two or more matching orders, and ready to use in a fee rule.
- Low confidence. Seen on one order so far. It still works, but one more order paid with it will confirm the name.
- Needs re-capture. The same name has since been seen with a different handle, so this older entry no longer matches at checkout. Confirm the newer row instead.
Rows labeled Unlabeled method are custom or manual methods, such as a bank deposit. Shopify shares only an anonymous handle for those, so either label the row yourself or complete an order using it.
Confirm a detected method
- Next to the method you want to use, click Add.
- Enter the name you want to see in your fee rules, for example "Klarna".
- Click Confirm.
The method moves to Confirmed methods and becomes selectable when you build a fee rule. You can remove it at any time.
Add a payment method manually
If you already know the exact handle Shopify uses for a method, click Add a payment method manually and enter a name, a type (offsite gateway, wallet, manual payment, buy now pay later, local, custom onsite, or other), and the handle.
Finding a handle without placing an order. If your store has the Checkout UI extension enabled, you can read a handle straight from the checkout editor. Open Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin, click Customize on your checkout, select the payment step in the preview, then expand Magical Fees Debug Information on the Magical Fees block. It lists the type and handle of every payment method your checkout offers, and marks the one currently selected. This panel only appears in the checkout editor, never to your customers.
Place a test order afterward. A wrong or guessed handle fails silently: the method looks correct in your settings and in your fee rule, but it never matches at checkout, so the fee never applies. After saving, place a test order using that method and confirm the fee applies. If you are not sure of the handle, use automatic detection or the checkout editor panel above rather than guessing.
Gift cards and store credit
These are left out of the detected list on purpose. A gift card redeems a balance alongside a real payment method rather than being a gateway choice, so it cannot be targeted by a payment method fee.
Using the method in a fee rule
A confirmed method appears alongside the built-in options at the Choose payment methods step. Build the rule the same way as any other payment method fee:
Always label deposits separately for compliance
Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
