Overview

Italy's RAEE system implements the EU WEEE Directive, requiring producers of electrical and electronic equipment to pay eco-contribution fees (eco-contributi) based on product category and weight. Fees fund the collection, transport, treatment, and recycling of waste electronics. The system is organized into recycling groups (R1 through R5) corresponding to different waste treatment processes. Producers must register with the national registry (Registro AEE) and join an approved collective system such as Erion WEEE or ERP Italy. The eco-contribution is typically visible to consumers as a separately stated fee on invoices.
