Overview

The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS) was established in 2011 under the Product Stewardship Act. It requires companies that import or manufacture televisions, computers, printers, and related peripherals to fund collection and recycling services. Households and small businesses can drop off e-waste at NTCRS collection points at no charge. The scheme targets recycling 80% of e-waste by 2026–27. Unlike some US state programs, the NTCRS does not impose consumer-visible fees at point of sale; costs are absorbed by industry. Retailers selling electronics in Australia are not required to collect a recycling fee from customers. Merchants should be aware that disposal of e-waste may incur charges at non-scheme facilities (e.g. some council services).

Enforcement

Liable companies must meet recycling targets. Non-compliance can result in enforcement under the Product Stewardship Act.

What merchants get wrong

US merchants selling into Australia may be familiar with state e-waste fees (e.g. California, New York) that appear at checkout. Australia's NTCRS works differently—no consumer fee. If you sell electronics to Australian customers, you don't need to add an e-waste surcharge. Producers/importers fund the scheme upstream.

Shopify compliance

This is an optional industry-standard fee — not mandated by law, but commonly charged. Shopify requires that any additional fees be transparently disclosed to customers and authorized before checkout.
