What is an address verification?

Magical Apps·Published help

An address verification is one check of one order's shipping address, run right after the order is placed. In the countries Google covers, Address Ninja sends the address to Google's Address Validation service and compares the answer with what the customer typed.

The three outcomes

  • Valid. The address exists and is complete. The customer sees nothing.
  • Suggestion. Google found a better version: a corrected postcode, a misspelt street, a missing region. The customer sees Check your shipping address with You entered and Suggested side by side, and two buttons: Use suggested address and Keep the address I entered.
  • Needs review. Google could not confirm part of the address and has no better version. The customer sees We could not confirm your shipping address and a hint such as "Please check the house number." or "Please add your apartment, suite or unit number.", with a note to contact the store before the order ships.

Where the customer sees it

On the Thank you page right after checkout, and on the Order status page when they come back to the order. A customer who is not signed in on the Order status page is asked to sign in before a suggestion is shown.

What happens when they choose

  • Use suggested address updates the order's shipping address. The name and phone number stay as they were. The order gets the tag address-ninja-fixed.
  • Keep the address I entered leaves the order as it is and adds the tag address-ninja-kept.
  • No choice leaves the tag address-ninja-review on the order, so you can find it before you ship.

If the order has already shipped, the customer sees "Your order has already shipped" and nothing changes.

What counts as a verification

One per address checked, which is usually one per order, whether the outcome is valid, a suggestion or a review. If the shipping address changes after the check, the new address is checked again and uses another verification. An order to a country you left out of the list is not verified. A test from the Address Ninja admin counts as one verification too. See Usage and overages.

Which countries

Google's Address Validation service covers 40 countries and regions, including the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, most of Western Europe, Brazil, Mexico, India, Japan and Malaysia. In a country Google does not cover but Shopify's own address check does, Address Ninja uses Shopify's verdict; that check still uses a verification, and the customer sees a suggestion only when Shopify has one. In a country neither covers, nothing runs and nothing is used. Leave out the countries you do not want checked in the Countries card.
