Nordic PANT Systems: Bottle and Can Deposit Rates in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland
Reference for the Nordic countries' PANT deposit-return systems covering refundable deposits on beverage containers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, achieving some of the world's highest return rates.
This is a regulated fee — required or governed by law in the jurisdictions below.
Overview
Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland each operate highly successful deposit-return systems for beverage containers, collectively known as PANT systems (Pantti in Finnish). These programs require producers and retailers to charge a refundable deposit on bottles and cans at the point of sale, refunded when consumers return containers via reverse vending machines. The Nordic systems consistently achieve return rates above 85%, making them global models for container recycling. Online beverage merchants shipping to Nordic countries must include the appropriate deposit in their pricing.
