Overview
Hungary launched its mandatory deposit return scheme on January 1, 2024, administered by MOHU (MOL Hulladékgazdálkodási Zrt.). The system requires a refundable deposit on single-use glass, plastic, and aluminum beverage containers from 0.1 to 3 liters. Milk and milk-based product containers are excluded. Consumers pay the deposit at purchase and receive it back when returning empty containers through approximately 4,000–5,000 REpont collection sites, including reverse vending machines at grocery stores over 400 sqm. The scheme aims to achieve a 90% recycling rate for plastic bottles in compliance with the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive.
