Overview
Ireland launched its national Deposit Return Scheme, branded as Re-Turn, on February 1, 2024. The scheme requires producers and retailers to charge a refundable deposit on eligible drinks containers made of PET plastic, aluminum, or steel. Consumers receive the full deposit back when they return empty, undamaged containers to participating retailers or return points. Containers must display the Re-Turn logo to be eligible. The scheme is operated by Re-Turn CLG and covers beverages from 150ml to 3 liters.

Producers placing beverages on the Irish market must register with Re-Turn and pay the required producer fees. Retailers above a certain size must accept returns. Non-compliance can result in enforcement action from the Department of the Environment.
