Overview
The Netherlands operates the Statiegeld deposit-return system for plastic beverage bottles and aluminum cans. Large plastic bottles (>1L) have been covered since the 1990s, small plastic bottles were added in July 2021, and cans were added in April 2023. Producers must register with Statiegeld Nederland and pay producer fees to fund the system. The legally required return rate target is 90%, though actual rates have fallen short, with 77% achieved in 2024. Retailers selling beverages in the Netherlands must charge the deposit at point of sale and accept returns.
