Overview

Most U.S. states impose a per-tire fee on the sale of new tires to fund scrap tire management programs, including collection, recycling, stockpile cleanup, and market development for recycled rubber products. Fees are typically charged at the point of sale and must be separately stated on invoices. Rates range from $0.25 to over $5.00 per tire depending on the state and tire type (passenger vs. truck). There is no federal tire fee; all programs are administered at the state level. A small number of states — including Alaska and Delaware — do not impose a tire-specific fee.
