How to create your first fee with Magical Fees

Kyle Godon·Published · Last updated help

Your first fee starts from the Add fee button. From there you either pick a template (fastest) or build a custom fee.

Option 1: Start from a template

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the Magical Fees app and click Add fee.
  2. Pick a template. Popular fees are at the top; search for anything else by the program's name (for example "CRV", "Pfand", or "mattress").
  3. On the preview, check the What it does card. If the template asks Selection required, pick the collection (or, for deposits, the option values) that covers your products.
  4. Click Activate fee.

If the button reads Create fee instead, the app still needs to be set up on one of the fee's sales channels. The fee is created as a Draft with a Finish your setup checklist; work down the list and click Activate fee when it's done.

See How to create a fee from a template for the full walkthrough.

Option 2: Create a custom fee

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the Magical Fees app and click Add fee.
  2. Click Create custom fee.
  3. In the Select a Method window, choose the Function Method (recommended), the Everywhere Method, or the Block Method. See What is the difference between the Function, Everywhere, and Block methods?
  4. Enter a Title for your fee.
  5. Add a description in the Details field if you want customers to see why the fee is being charged.
  6. Choose whether the fee applies to products or the order.
  7. Under What it charges, pick Percentage or a fixed amount and enter your value.
  8. Choose how you want to bundle the fee:
    • Matching product: bundles the fee with the specific products.
    • Other product fees: bundles fees together as a separate line item (best for excluding them from product-based discounts).
  9. If you're applying the fee to products, set how often the fee applies:
    • Every product: the fee is charged for each matching product in the cart.
    • Once per product: the fee is charged once per product, no matter the quantity.
    • Once per order: the fee is charged once per order. Only available when the fee is bundled with Other product fees.
  10. Under What it applies to, choose which products the fee applies to:
  • All products
  • Specific collections
  • Specific products
  • Custom conditions (set your own rules)
  1. If you're creating an order fee, choose if it applies to the subtotal or the total (total is only available on the Plus plan).
  2. Click Save.

After saving

The fee's page shows a Where it works card for each sales channel. If a channel reads Setup required, the button next to it takes you to the fix (the theme app embed, the POS tile, or draft-order settings). Once a real order carries the fee, the row reads Seen live on order #1042.

To change the fee later, open it from Fees and click Customize this fee.

Always label deposits separately for compliance

Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
