The fast way: start from a template
Magical Fees includes recycling-fee templates with the statutory amounts filled in: California battery fee (lead-acid), California covered battery-embedded fee, and mattress recycling for California, Oregon, and Rhode Island. More eco-fee programs are being added. Click Add fee, open the template, pick the collection that holds the products the fee covers, and click Activate fee. The amount and receipt title come from the program's own rules, and the fee's Where it works card tells you if any sales channel still needs setup. See How to create a fee from a template.
The steps below build the same fee by hand as a custom fee.
To charge an eco or recycling fee, you can set up a fixed fee for specific products and bundle it with those products. Here’s how:
- In your Shopify admin, open the Magical Fees app.
- Click Add fee, then Create custom fee.
- In the Select a Method window, choose the Function Method.
- Enter a title for your fee, such as “Eco Fee” or “Recycling Fee.”
- Add a description in the Details field to explain the fee to your customers.
- Set the fee type to Product.
- Under What it charges, choose a fixed amount and enter the fee you want to charge.
- Set how often the fee applies:
- Every product: The fee is charged for each item.
- Once per product: The fee is charged once per product, no matter the quantity.
- To make fees mandatory and non-optional, disable the "requires consent" option in the fee rule settings. This ensures fees are automatically added without requiring customer approval.
- If "requires consent" is enabled and customers decline, the product associated with the fee will be removed from the cart, ensuring compliance with mandatory fee rules.
- For bundling, select Matching Product to link the fee directly to the product.
- Under product selection, choose Specific products or Specific collections and select the items that should have the fee.
- Click Save.
Your eco or recycling fee will now be added to the right products at checkout.
Additionally, location-based fees can be configured to apply automatically based on the customer’s location under the Locations section.

Always label deposits separately for compliance
Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
