How to apply a fee to order subtotal vs. total with Magical Fees

Kyle Godon·Published · Last updated help

When creating an order fee in Magical Product Fees, you can choose to apply the fee to either the order subtotal or the order total.

  • Order subtotal: This option is available on all plans. The fee is calculated based on the subtotal before any discounts, taxes, or shipping.
  • Order total: This option is only available on the Plus plan with Shopify Plus. The fee is calculated based on the total after discounts, taxes, and shipping.

To set this up, create a new fee, choose Order as the type, then select either Subtotal or Total under the conditions section. If you do not see the "Order Total" option, your store may not be on Shopify Plus.

Always label deposits separately for compliance

Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
