The fast way: start from a template
Magical Fees includes tariff templates: US import tariff pass-through, US tariff on Chinese imports, US tariff on Canadian imports, US tariff on Mexican imports, and US tariff on Canadian autos, alcohol & dairy (Section 338). Each already limits the fee to orders delivered to the United States. Click Add fee, open the template, pick the collection of products that carry the tariff, set the rate, and click Activate fee. The amount and receipt title come from the program's own rules, and the fee's Where it works card tells you if any sales channel still needs setup. See How to create a fee from a template.
The steps below build the same fee by hand as a custom fee.
To add a tariff surcharge or excise fee with Magical Product Fees, you can set up either a percentage fee or a fixed fee for specific products.
Here’s how to do it:
- In your Shopify admin, open the Magical Fees app.
- Click Add fee, then Create custom fee.
- In the Select a Method window, choose the Function Method. This bundles the fee with the product at checkout, which is recommended for most stores.
- Enter a title for your fee, like “Tariff Surcharge” or “Excise Fee.”
- Add a description in the Details field if you want customers to see more information at checkout.
- Set the fee type to Product.
- Under What it charges, choose either: -Percentage and enter the rate you want to charge, or -Fixed amount and enter the dollar amount you want to charge.
- Decide how often the fee applies: -Every product if you want the fee to apply to each item, or -Once per product to charge the fee just once per product, even if more than one is purchased.
- For bundling, select Matching Product to link the fee directly to the product.
- Under product selection, choose Specific products or Specific collections, and select the products or collections that should have the fee.
- Click Save.
Your surcharge or excise fee will now be added to the right products in your store. See below for a video walkthrough on how to add a tariff or excise tax to products in your store:

Always label deposits separately for compliance
Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.
