Overview

Canada does not prohibit payment method surcharges at the federal level. Merchants may pass through processing costs for credit cards, PayPal, Klarna, buy-now-pay-later, and other payment methods provided they disclose the fee clearly before payment. Visa, Mastercard, and other networks have their own surcharge rules (disclosure, cap at cost of acceptance). Quebec has additional consumer protection rules that may affect how fees are presented; merchants selling in Quebec should ensure disclosure meets provincial requirements. Many Canadian and international merchants use Magical Fees to add these surcharges on Shopify. Always check your payment provider's terms and any provincial or industry guidance.
