How to create a customer tag based fee with Magical Fees (Shopify Plus only)

To set up a customer tag based fee, you need to be on the Growth Plan with Shopify Plus.

  1. In the app admin, click Create Fee. Or click View Fees if you want to edit an existing fee.
  2. Under the Customer tags section, click Enable customer tags.
  3. In the Update data access window click Update.
  4. Click the Add customer tags.
  5. Select the tags the fee should apply to. You can use the search field to find a specific tag.
  6. Click Select in the modal.
  7. Click Save.

This will apply the fee only to orders where the customers tags match the tags you choose for the fee.

Always label deposits separately for compliance

Display bottle deposit fees as a clearly labeled, separate line item at checkout and on receipts. This meets regulatory transparency requirements, builds customer trust by showing exactly what they're paying, and makes it significantly easier to track deposits for reporting and audits. Use a clear label like "Bottle deposit" or "Container deposit (CRV)" so customers immediately understand the charge.

Magical Fees is the only fee app that allows you to apply a fee based on a specific or individual state/province situation. All the other apps we tested only allow 'Location' (the entire country) which is a major limitation.
