To notify your customers when you are back from vacation, you can email everyone who was tagged during your store’s vacation period. Here’s how to do it:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Customers.
- In the customer editor, click the Filter link.
- Select Customer tags.
- Choose Contains this exact tag.
- Enter vacation-mode as the tag.
- Click Run query or ▹ Run.
- Click **Save **and then enter "Vacation mode" as the name for the segment.
- Click Save.
Now, to email this segment:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps and sales channels.
- Click Email.
- Click Open app.
- Click Create campaign.
- Select an email template.
- Click To, then select the "Vacation mode" customer segment.
- Enter a subject line for your email.
- After setting up the email details, customize the body of your message to let your customers know you’re back.
- From the email editor, click Review.
- Click Schedule send, and then proceed to send now or schedule a send time.
This process lets you easily reach out to all customers who visited during vacation mode and invite them to return.
Vacation mode only blocks the online store
Vacation mode only disables the Add to Cart button on your online store theme. Orders can still come through via Apple Pay, Shop Pay, Google Pay, Shop app, PayPal Express, saved cart links, and other sales channels. The app hides the button via frontend injection on your theme — it cannot block checkout at the API level. If you need to fully prevent orders, also pause inventory or disable sales channels directly in Shopify. This is the biggest misunderstanding about vacation mode: it does not make it impossible to place orders, only harder for customers using the standard store flow.
